‘Superannuation and wealth management for private business: dealing with current structures' – the 2017 Private Business Tax Retreat

Laura Hanrahan of HopgoodGanim Lawyers practises
exclusively in the areas of superannuation, estate planning and administration.
At the 2017
Private Business Tax Retreat
, she will present ‘Superannuation and wealth management for private business: dealing
with current
 structures’, one of
the nine plenary sessions of this two-day event.

Over the years, successive governments have introduced
hundreds of rule changes but until now, no previous reforms have so
dramatically affected wealth already in the superannuation environment. In her
session, Laura argues that the superannuation reforms to be fully implemented
from 1 July 2017 have killed the sacred cow. We spoke to her about what about
what to expect from her session.

Laura told us that “Attendees can expect to hear about the
‘options’ under the new superannuation legislation”. The session will use case
studies to demonstrate how family groups may address structures and plans that
were implemented prior to these reforms.

“The practical case study approach will help delegates in
dealing with their clients by giving some practical meaning to these complex
new rules”, Laura said. In her session, Laura will look at providing funding for existing
investment, including meeting financing requirements of LRBAs and private unit
trust investment. It also covers managing SMSF transition requirements for more
complex pension structures, including previously grandfathered income streams
such as complying pensions and market-linked pensions, as well as transition
planning for ‘asset heavy’ SMSFs.

In her role at HopgoodGanim Lawyers, Laura also assists
clients in a range of matters including wills, testamentary trusts, powers of
attorney, family discretionary trusts and the administration of deceased
estates. Affiliated with The Tax Institute since 2008, she is a member of the
Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the SMSF Association, and
regularly presents papers on relevant superannuation and estate matters to
various industry audiences.

Asked which other sessions she is particularly keen on
attending at the Retreat, she mentioned “The Keynote from Dr Baden U’ren on ‘Technology and its Impact on Professionals’”,
which will advise on how new technologies will impact us in Australia and,
specifically, our profession’s service model.

A keen stand-up paddle-boarder, when Laura is not on the
water at Morton Bay or immersed in tax, she can be found chasing after her two
and five year old.
